FIMNa 2008

Summer Festival

The International Festival of Music of Navarra (FIMNa) had its first edition in August 2008 in Eugi, in the Esteríbar Valley of Navarra. Welcoming eighteen musicians from various countries (UK, Ireland, China, Norway, Spain, Germany and Switzerland), FIMNa debuted to great public and critical acclaim. During the week of the festival, Eugi became a centre for learning, creativity and the exchange of artistic ideas. The people of this beautiful Navarrese village welcomed both young and established musicians from different countries, inviting them to their houses, driving them in their cars and sharing their food. A magical atmosphere was created which was enjoyed by people of all ages.

FIMNa 2008 consisted of a series of violin master classes, taught by Professor Detlef Hahn, concerts and other musical activities involving students and invited artists of the festival.

FIMNa granted a full scholarship (The Sarasate Scholarship) to the young Navarrese violinist Uxue Gárate, to take part in the masterclass programme with Professor Hahn.
The festival also organised a number of musical Workshops in the community, involving almost fifty children aged three to fourteen. It was a unique opportunity for these children to hear and learn about musical instruments from FIMNa’s musicians and enjoy a creative and educational musical experience.

Tribute Concert to Sarasate in Madrid

In December 2008, FIMNa organised a tribute concert in Madrid to the legendary violin virtuoso Pablo Sarasate in the year marking the centenary of his death. The concert took place on Monday the 15th of December in the Manuel de Falla Hall of the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. Several of Sarasate’s works were performed as well as other pieces from the violin and cello repertoire. The programme also included the premiere of a new piece, Finding Sarasate, by Federico Jusid, commissioned by FIMNa especially for this occasion. The new work was premiered by Norwegian violinist Anders Nilsson and Italian pianist Anna Barbero.
