FIMNa 2010

The International Festival of Music of Navarra (FIMNa) had its third edition in August 2010 in Eugi, in the Esteríbar Valley of Navarra. Welcoming once again young and established musicians from a broader range of countries (UK, Iceland, Ireland, Spain, Germany, USA and Italy), FIMNa expanded its range of activities and concerts and established itself. During the week of the festival, Eugi became once again a centre for learning, creativity and the exchange of artistic ideas.

FIMNa’s 2010 consisted of an exciting mix of concerts, workshops and the premiere of a new Pilgrim Song written by John Barber in collaboration with children from the Esteribar Valley as part of its outreach programme: FIMNa in the Community. As well, violinist Marta Ramírez was granted a full scholarship (The Sarasate Scholarship) in FIMNa’s first professional apprentice programme as part of the 2010 FIMNa in the Community outreach project. Marta worked alongside English composer John Barber and other resident musicians during several days of workshops and also played in the final performance. The recipient of the Sarasate Scholarship is selected in collaboration with the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra.

FIMNa also brought its music across the border to France once again, this time to the beautiful church of Saint Étienne de Baïgorry. This was the start of a unique collaboration with Baïgorry’s Organ Association and their Festival Musical de Basse Navarre, the first step in a cross-border relationship between the two festivals which will develop in future years within the framework of cooperation between the regions of Aquitania and Navarra. This project is embedded within the Council of Eugi´s objectives and projects at present which aim at developing social, cultural and economic links between the Baigorri Valley and Eugi.

During the festival, several pieces had their Spanish or French premiere:

FIMNa 2009

After the success of its first year, the International Festival of Music of Navarra (FIMNa) had its second edition in August 2009 in Eugi, in the Esteríbar Valley of Navarra. Welcoming once again young and established musicians from a broader range of countries (UK, Iceland, Brasil, Rusia, Norway, Spain, Germany and Georgia), FIMNa expanded its range of activities and concerts and established itself. During the week of the festival, Eugi became once again a centre for learning, creativity and the exchange of artistic ideas.

FIMNa’s 2009 consisted of an exciting mix of concerts, masterclasses, outreach projects as well as the premiere of a piece written for flamenco guitar and string quartet by composer Antonio Gómez Schneekloth. The Navarrese artist Faustino Aizkorbe also collaborated with FIMNa to create a work of art for our concerts in the Eugi Church.

The Mitya Quartet, with violinists Amaya Razkin and Asier Jiménez, violist Paloma Ortas and cellist Igor Saenz, were granted the Sarasate Scholarship, to take part in the chamber music masterclasses with Artistic Director and Professor Detlef Hahn and the flamenco workshop with Óscar Herrero and composer-in-residence Antonio Gómez Schneekloth.

The recipients of the Sarasate Scholarship were selected in collaboration with the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra.

The festival also organised a number of musical Workshops in the community, involving almost fifty children aged three to fourteen. It was a unique opportunity for these children to hear and learn about musical instruments from FIMNa’s musicians and enjoy a creative and educational musical experience.

FIMNa 2008

Summer Festival

The International Festival of Music of Navarra (FIMNa) had its first edition in August 2008 in Eugi, in the Esteríbar Valley of Navarra. Welcoming eighteen musicians from various countries and under the artistic direction of Detlef Hahn (UK, Ireland, China, Norway, Spain, Germany and Switzerland), FIMNa debuted to great public and critical acclaim. During the week of the festival, Eugi became a centre for learning, creativity and the exchange of artistic ideas. The people of this beautiful Navarrese village welcomed both young and established musicians from different countries, inviting them to their houses, driving them in their cars and sharing their food. A magical atmosphere was created which was enjoyed by people of all ages.

FIMNa 2008 consisted of a series of violin master classes, taught by Professor Detlef Hahn, concerts and other musical activities involving students and invited artists of the festival.

FIMNa granted a full scholarship (The Sarasate Scholarship) to the young Navarrese violinist Uxue Gárate, to take part in the masterclass programme with Professor Hahn.
The festival also organised a number of musical Workshops in the community, involving almost fifty children aged three to fourteen. It was a unique opportunity for these children to hear and learn about musical instruments from FIMNa’s musicians and enjoy a creative and educational musical experience.

Tribute Concert to Sarasate in Madrid

In December 2008, FIMNa organised a tribute concert in Madrid to the legendary violin virtuoso Pablo Sarasate in the year marking the centenary of his death. The concert took place on Monday the 15th of December in the Manuel de Falla Hall of the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. Several of Sarasate’s works were performed as well as other pieces from the violin and cello repertoire. The programme also included the premiere of a new piece, Finding Sarasate, by Federico Jusid, commissioned by FIMNa especially for this occasion. The new work was premiered by Norwegian violinist Anders Nilsson and Italian pianist Anna Barbero.
